1.- How long has GEOMAR been in business?

Geomar was founded in 1993 by current CEO Javier Donoso. This entrepreneurship started as a small business in the South of Chile, and one year after the operation began, Geomar launched its first processing plant for canned seafood in Concepción.

After reaching top quality standards needed to aim for the promising Asian market, Geomar started processing several products of the sea, in order to keep a product mix that allowed it to expand the business to other regions of the world. This is how Geomar finally reached the European and American markets by combining unique seafood from the Chilean sea, critical processing know-how, and a strategic market vision.


2.- Where are products (raw material) sourced?

All Geomar canned products, are produced only with raw material from the Chilean Pacific Ocean (FAO 87).

3.- How does GEOMAR responsibly source its seafood? 

With over 4,000 kilometers of coastline, the fishermen hand pick seafood in wild areas approved and supervised by the state. The capture is done using small boats, from where the fishermen dive down to the bottom of the sea to gather shellfish, thus ensuring a responsible capture of wild life resources.


4.- Do I need to cook cans?

All Geomar canned products are READY TO EAT. They are all cooked in the can as part of the canning process. This means that they are always fully cooked in the sealed can and may be eaten straight from the can without the need for additional cooking


5.- Does GEOMAR use genetically modified ingredients (GM) in any of its products?

No we don’t!


6.- What is Omega 3 and why is the Omega 3 content higher in GEOMAR products? 

Omega 3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids that protect us against different diseases like cancer, asthma, depression and vascular conditions, among others.

Our canned products are rich in Omega 3, because we cook our products only once, in the can, retaining all of its natural oils. Other canned brands may cook the raw material before putting it in the can, and then adding the coverage, thereby losing much of its nutritional value.


7.- What does BPA stand for? Does GEOMAR use BPA in its Cans? 

BPA stands for bisphenol A, an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s, often used in containers that store food and beverages.

At GEOMAR, the health of our customers is of the highest priority and is the reason why we only buy cans strictly complying with U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) guidelines and European regulations. The manufacturers, from which we buy our cans, do not use BPA in the formulation of the can or lid linings. They state that their lining formulation is “BPA-NI” (Not Intended).


8.- How long is the Shelf Life of Geomar canned products?

 All our products guarantee a shelf life of at least 4 years from the production date.


9.- How long can you store an open can of GEOMAR?

After opening, any remaining product should be placed in a sealed independent container outside the can and immediately refrigerated. The product should be used within 1-2 days.


10.- Does GEOMAR have certifications?

Yes. Our facility operates under the HACCP system which has been certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA, number 10210884682) and the European Community (EC number 08318); this guarantees the origin, process and quality of our products.

In 2008 we also obtained the exclusive BRC certification (British Retail Consortium), which allows us to meet the highest standards of safety and quality in our products and processes.


11.- Is Geomar working in any other certification process?  

Currently we are working towards MSC certification (Marine Stewardship Council). This certification aims to ensure our seafood can be traced back through the supply chain to a fishery that has been certified against the MSC standard.


 12.- What makes Geomar products different from other seafood products?  

Geomar is driven by sustainability and quality. Our raw material are the highest quality possible to find and we guarantee sustainable harvesting methods since we only catch in legal and certified areas, approved and supervised by the state.
